The Lotus 77 was the quick answer to the subpar Lotus 76 and the foundation of the great Lotus 78. The 77 used an, at the time, unusual series of rocker arms instead of a typical wishbone suspension allowing the suspension and ride height to be easily adjusted for each track. This worked better in theory than in practice and the car never really hit its stride until the end of the 1976 season when, in dramatic fashion, Mario Andretti won the Japan GP (the 77’s only victory) in monsoon conditions one lap ahead of Patrick Depailler and that season’s soon to be world champion James Hunt.
